Speak Malay Like a Local – Lesson 51 : Time

1) There are three Malay words for Time:

  • Masa
  • Waktu
  • Pukul

 

2) Masa & Waktu

  • Both mean Time
  • Generally interchangeable in colloquial Malay
  • Masais applicable in more situations, so when in doubt, use Masa
  • The main difference is Masa can be used when referring to time as something quantifiable – like plenty of time, not enough time, a little time etc
  • Whereas Waktu is used for ‘naming’ time – like work time, study time, play time etc

 

3) Waktu (example)

ENGLISH MALAY
   
1 Study time : Waktu belajar
     
2 Work time                                : Waktu kerja
     
3 Meal time : Waktu makan
     
4 Sleep time : Waktu tidur
   
5 Play time : Waktu main
     
6 Recreational time : Waktu rekreasi
     
7 Not possible, because three o’clock in the afternoon is during working hours : Tak boleh sebab pukul tiga petang ialah waktu kerja
     No :      Tak
     Can :      Boleh
     Because :      Sebab
     O’clock :      Pukul
     Three :      Tiga
     Evening / Afternoon :      Petang
     Is :      Ialah
     Time for :      Waktu
     Work :      Kerja

 

4) Masa (example)

ENGLISH MALAY
   
1 We don’t have time : Kita tak ada masa
     We :      Kita
     No :      Tak
     Have :      Ada
     Time :      Masa
 
2 Is there enough time? : Cukup ke masa?
     Enough :      Cukup
     Or not :      Ke
     Time :      Masa
 
3 When did he leave? I didn’t even notice. : Bila masa dia keluar? Saya tak perasan pun.
     When :      Bila
     Time :      Masa
     He/She :      Dia
     Leave/Go out/Exit :      Keluar
     I :      Saya
     No :      Tak
     Notice :      Perasan
     At all :      Pun

 

5) Pukul (example)

ENGLISH MALAY
   
1 O’clock : Pukul
     
2 Hit someone or something : Pukul
 
3 Five o’clock : Pukul lima
 
4 What time is it now? : Sekarang pukul berapa?
     Now :      Sekarang
     What time :      Pukul berapa
     O’clock :      Pukul
     How much / How many :      Berapa
 
5 What : Apa
 
6 It is five o’clock right now : Sekarang pukul lima
     Now :      Sekarang
     O’Clock :      Pukul
     Five :      Lima

 

6) Time Measurement (example)

 

ENGLISH MALAY
   
1 Hour : Jam
     
2 Minute : Minit
     
3 Second : Saat
     
4 Moment / A fraction of a second : Detik
 
5 Half : Setengah
     
6 Quarter : Suku
     
7 Half past five : Lima setengah
     
8 Quarter past five : Lima suku
