Speak Malay Like a Local – Lesson 2: Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Evening and Good Night

Hello! In this video, I demonstrate how to say the usual daily greetings like a local with a special emphasis on how to pronounce the letter ‘E’ and the letter ‘T’ like proper Malay people do 😀

ENGLISH   MALAY

Basic Greetings
Good morning : Selamat pagi
Good afternoon : Selamat tengah hari
Good evening : Selamat petang
Good night : Selamat malam^
^ ‘Selamat malam‘ should only be used when you’re leaving or when you’re saying goodbye. The other three greetings can be used as a replacement for ‘hello’. You can also use them to say goodbye, but it is less common.

Other words I mentioned in the video
Safe* : Selamat
*While the function of ‘selamat‘ in Malay is typically used as part of a greeting, ‘selamat‘ by itself means ‘safe‘.  So in Malay, you’re literally wishing people safe mornings, safe noons, safe evenings and safe nights 😀
